Meeting Archives: November 2001 to June 2007

(Reverse chronological order.)

Former Micronet Co-Chair and Co-Founder, Yau-Man Chan, Makes Good!
Tuesday, June 19, 2007
10:30 am to 12:00 noon
150 University Hall

And now for something completely different - let's end the year with some fun. For the last Micronet meeting of this school year, come ready with questions not about IT issues but about the original and still most popular Reality TV show - CBS's Survivor. Yau-Man Chan (College of Chemistry), fresh off the Fiji islands, will give you the inside scoop of all the back stabbing and general nastiness of his fellow castaways. Put your brains in neutral, forget about virus, worms and network problems for 90 minutes and find out how Hollywood does things. If you still don't know what we are talking about, check these links out:

Our speaker will be Harold Pakulat, Associate Director, IST Service Desk. Among other topics, Harold can answer your questions - raised during the February 2007 Micronet meeting - about the ways that campus IT staff can best obtain assistance from IST.

Code Repository Service, Creating a Developer Community on Campus
Tuesday, March 20, 2007
10:30 am to 12:00 noon
150 University Hall

Centrally-Hosted Code Repository Service. Steve Masover of IST - Application Architecture will describe and discuss a centrally-hosted Subversion repository service that IST is preparing to offer the campus (pending approval of a budget request in the current cycle).

The presentation will include an overview of how version control works and why it is a central component of robust software development environments. A description of the proposed service will follow: how it will be accessed by developers on campus, how it will be structured to facilitate code-sharing, how Subversion is expected to integrate with deployments to the IST Webfarm, and how IT groups using the service will be empowered to maintain and govern write-access to their own repositories. A context-setting overview of what IST Application Architecture is providing to IST developers will frame a request for input from Micronet about what a central application architecture group can do for departmental IT staff; that discussion is intended to dovetail with the second major topic of this month's Micronet meeting ...

Creating an active community of application/service developers on campus. Does creation of an active community of application/service developers on campus warrant forming a new group? Or should such a group somehow be a part of or attached to Micronet? These questions were raised at the February meeting , and will get a full airing on March 20th. Please join in this discussion with Steve Masover and Ryan Means.

Open Discussion of Micronet's Directions
Tuesday, February 20, 2007
10:30 am to 12:00 noon
150 University Hall

Claudia Waters and Roger Emond, Micronet's incoming co-coordinators, and Ryan Means and Gabriel Gonzalez, who have served as Micronet's co-coordinators for the past 18 months, would like to use the first Micronet meeting of the year to discuss your interests and what direction you would like Micronet to take in the next year.

At the meeting, the coordinators will also share the results of a survey of the environments and interests of Micronet's members. (Thanks to all who participated!)

Central Backup and Data Storage Solutions, Server Co-location Service
Tuesday, March 15, 2005
10:00 am - 11:15 am
775 (A & B) Tan Hall (McCollum Room on the top floor of Tan Hall [location], a building on the Mining Circle next to Latimer Hall)

IST's Central Computing Services (CCS) will present brief overviews of two services offered from the new Campus Data Center in 2195 Hearst. For background, please see Shel Waggener, New campus data center and available services (http://inews.berkeley.edu/bcc/Fall2004/datacenter3.html).

[10:00 am] Walt Hagmaier, Manager of CCS's Data Systems Group,
will present CCS's campus backup and disk storage solutions. CCS has improved its ability to back up and store data across campus at a drastically reduced price. Desktop and servers can now be backed up for about $.50 per gigabyte per month. Also, disk storage is now available on demand, with 3 tiers of storage currently available in Premium, Enhanced and Standard offerings for as low as $5/GB per year. These services are available now and eliminate the headache of storing your own data and backing it up. Plus all the data is stored in the new Hearst Data Center, offering first class environmentals and monitoring.

[10:40 am] Patrick McGrath, CCS's Associate Director, will present CCS's server co-location service. The new campus data center was designed to function as a hardened facility for the purpose of housing computing systems that provide critical services to the campus. Topics covered in Patrick's presentation include:

  1. Data Center features, including access, security, redundancy, networking, power, air and monitoring.
  2. How CCS manages the facility.
  3. The co-location recharge model, with sample one-time and ongoing costs.
  4. How to engage CCS's services.

[10:00 am] Cliff Frost, Director of IST's Communication and Network Services (CNS), will discuss campus networking, including the Campus Riser Project (http://cns-oir.berkeley.edu/riser/), which is bringing modern, high-speed networking infrastructure to many parts of the campus which still have old 10 Mbps coaxial wiring in their vertical ("riser") cabling pathways and utility closets. He will also cover the health of the campus network, as well as other topics to be announced.

[11:00 am] Shel Waggener, Director of IST's Central Computing Services (CCS), will answer the question, "How do you move 300 computers in the middle of fiscal close and not miss a beat?" He will review the successful July 2004 move from Evans Hall to the new campus data center in 2195 Hearst (http://inews.berkeley.edu/bcc/Fall2004/datacentersuccess.html), and review some of the key new services now available to campus from this world class facility.

Campus Minimum Security Standards, Supporting VPN Access to the On-line Payroll Time Reporting Systems (OPTRS)
Tuesday, July 20, 2004
10:00 am - 12:00 noon
775 (A & B) Tan Hall (McCollum Room on the top floor of Tan Hall [location], a building on the Mining Circle next to Latimer Hall)

The campus's Information Systems Security Officer, Craig Lant of Systems and Network Security (SNS), and Ryan Means, Chief Technical Officer, Boalt Hall School of Law-Computer Services, will discuss the campus's Minimum Security Standards for Networked Devices (http://security.berkeley.edu:2002/MinStds/). This topic generated considerable discussion on the Micronet mailing list during June 2004.

Kevin Burney, Computing and Network Systems Architect, Vice-Chancellor of Business and Administrative Services, will give a presentation on how to support the implementation of a VPN project involving the On-line Payroll Time Reporting Systems (OPTRS). OPTRS is a component of the systemwide personnel/payroll system (PPS), which the Berkeley campus is just starting to use, although it has already been in use at some other UC campuses. OPTRS will be deployed to all departments to allow HR personnel the ability to "to facilitate on-line reporting of positive time, payroll adjustment transactions, vacation, sick leave and compensatory time usage." As Kevin notes, "My presentation will be about the VPN solution for mainframe access [to OPTRS]. It will be an overview of how this project came to be and other reasons for implementing the solution, some brief installation notes and a Q&A session." Also to sweeten the pot, Mike Sinatra and/or Siegrid Rickenbach of IST's Communication and Network Services (IST-CNS) will give us an update on the VPN solution for external access.

The original PowerPoint presentation from Kevin Burney's talk, Introduction to VPN for MVS [PPT], is available for downloading.

The rest of the meeting will be used for an informal roundtable on campus IT issues. This can include feedback on Micronet meetings since last September, and thoughts for future topics, including the possibility of setting up one or more 'birds of a feather' meetings for sharing of technical knowledge. Suggestions for roundtable topics are welcome, and can be sent in advance of the meeting to Micronet's coordinators.
