Thursday, October 11, 2001
10:00 am - 12:00 noon
775 (A & B) Tan Hall (McCollum Room on the top floor of Tan Hall,
a building on the Mining Circle next to Latimer Hall)

Cliff Frost from CNS will discuss campus network news and problems,
followed by CIO Jack McCredie's annual State of Campus computing
address. SNS may participate as well, but we are awaiting
confirmation from them.
Tuesday, September 18, 2001
10:00 am - 12:00 noon
60 Barrows (note new location for this meeting: not in Tan Hall)

Microsoft's Mark Ciabattari, as well as (potentially) one or more
campus speakers, will describe and answer questions regarding
Microsoft's new licensing arrangements.

As Bob Callaway has warned, there may be trouble ahead if we don't plan
properly for MS licensing changes, and that actions based on the changes
might be necessary as soon as September 21. See Bob's
initial message and
followup.

In advance of each meeting we will solicit questions and topics for our
speakers to address. Please consider this our first solicitation, and
email Jon Johnsen with questions for Mark Ciabattari or campus speakers as
soon as possible. Thanks.
Friday, May 25, 2001
10:00 am - 12:00 noon
775 (A & B) Tan Hall (McCollum Room on the top floor of Tan Hall,
a building on the Mining Circle next to Latimer Hall)

"Security."

May's Micronet meeting will concern itself with the state of Security
on this campus, what individuals and units can do to increase secruity
and what direction the campus as a whole is moving in as related to
security.

If there are any specific lines of questioning you would
like explored please send your questions to John Ives as soon as possible.
Thursday, April 26, 2001
10:00 am - 12:00 noon
775 (A & B) Tan Hall (McCollum Room on the top floor of Tan Hall,
a building on the Mining Circle next to Latimer Hall)

"Alternative Unix."

A discussion coordinated by Michael Sinatra and John Ives of:

- Unix (open-source and commercial) on intel
- Unix (open-source and commercial) on Macintosh/PowerPC
- Open-source Unix on traditionally commercial-Unix platforms (e.g.
	Linux/sparc & alpha, *BSD/sparc & alpha & ..., etc.)

Michael plans to talk *briefly* about:

- Open source software and the campus network
- "Do something fun with that old SparcStation!"
- License issues (GPL vs. BSD), if sufficient time & interest

And Michael and John would like others to talk about:

- Linux in general -- what's new/neat

- Enterprise users
For example, does your department provide Mac or Windows
file & print services on an Alternative Unix plaform?
(IIRC Housing & Dining was using Linux and samba, is
this still true?) Are you using these platforms for anything
that is mission-critical, production, or instructional in nature?

- Darwin on Mac/PowerPC (we can also talk about MacOS X, but I think that
will get ample coverage in future meetings/demos under the auspices
of MagNet and our Apple reps.)

Please send e-mail to Michael
with your suggestions for additional topics, and whether you know of
presenters for these topics.
Thursday, February 15, 2001

discussing current and future plans for the software and soliciting
user feedback for the next version of the CD in Fall 2001.

- IST's Departmental Onsite Computing Support (DOCS) (http://docs.berkeley.edu/),
describing the group's services, which provide computing support to
campus departments at their sites on a recharge basis.

- IST's Departmental Technology Solutions (DTS), whose UC Backup
service provides centralized workstation backup support for the UC
Berkeley campus over the campus network. This service is available for
PCs running Windows, Macintoshes, and many Unix workstations.

10:00 am - 12:00 noon
775 (A & B) Tan Hall (McCollum Room on the top floor of Tan Hall,
a building on the Mining Circle next to Latimer Hall)

Compensation

In light of October's merit review process, the September Micronet
meeting will deal with compensation. A couple of people from Human
Resources will be on hand to discuss the review process as well as
other issues dealing with pay increases and reclassifications.

As the campus has historically lagged behind the private sector
when it comes to IT salaries, we encourage you to attend this meeting
so that we can all better understand the compensation process.
Tuesday, May 9, 2000
10:00 am - 12:00 noon
775 (A & B) Tan Hall (McCollum Room on the top floor of Tan Hall,
a building on the Mining Circle next to Latimer Hall)

Security

Because we all need to worry about computer and network security, that
will be the topic of May's Micronet meeting. The meeting is going to
be divided into two sections of approximately equal lengths, a few
mini-presentations concerning things happening around campus and a
Question and Answer period. Scheduled to attend and present are Geoff
Galitz, Mike Sinatra, John Broughton and George Lavender.

Geoff Galitz will be discussing the basics of security (where attacks
come from, etc.) plus some of the applications he is building for use
in the College of Chemistry and around campus.

Michael Sinatra will be discussing firewalls and how some departments
are implementing them.

John Broughton (Campus IS Security Analyst) and George Lavender
(Interim Campus IS Security Officer) both are working part-time
directly for Associate Vice Chancellor McCredie, Information Systems.
They will report on implementing the
recommendations of the 1998 ITATF Security Working Group
(http://ita.berkeley.edu:4259/security/swg.report.html). They will
discuss the progress in hiring a permanent Campus IS Security Officer,
and talk about various campus-wide initiatives that are likely to
impact departments in the next twelve months. They are very interested
in comments and feedback from departments on these initiatives.

Computing Resource Manager series. Yau-Man will talk a bit about
career development and the skills needed for advancement within each
of the series. Urszula will say something about the work to date of the
new Committee on Classification of Technical Jobs and will talk to us
about a new Job Analysis Questionnaire which is being developed to

10:00 am - 12:00 noon
775-A Tan Hall (the top floor of this building, next to Latimer Hall)

Our speakers will be Jaqueline Craig and Karen Eft of IST's Information
Technology Policy group. They will talk to us about their work crafting
and promoting IST's computer use and abuse policies and procedures, as
well as providing direct consultation to departmental computing managers
and answering the campuswide abuse email hotline.

To emphasis just how detrimental the use of computing technology to
instigate trouble can be, they have promised to tell us a few anecdotes
that have occurred on campus over the years. But then given yesterday's
'Denial of Service' attack on various Windows 95 and NT machines throughout
campus, many of us now have direct understanding of the seriousness of the
issue, one that often has little associated humor. This will be quite an
interesting meeting.

A URL for the meeting agenda can be found at
<URL:http://socrates.berkeley.edu:7015/publicity/micronet.html>.

There will be time for questions, so please feel free to bring them.

committees charged with looking into security.

Vance Vaughan (IS&T) will talk about intercampus initiatives and
new technologies such as public key infrastructure (PKI).

In addition, the meeting room is reserved until 1:00 pm to give
us all a change to informally discuss these or other Micronet-related
topics after the meeting. Bring a sack lunch and join us!
